Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of cognition in humans, animals, and machines. It encompasses the traditional disciplines of psychology, computer science, neuroscience, linguistics and philosophy. The goal of cognitive science is to understand the principles of intelligence with the hope that this will lead to better comprehension of the mind and of learning and to develop intelligent devices.

Les sciences cognitives visent à comprendre la connaissance sous toutes ses formes : des formes plus périphériques impliquées dans la perception, aux formes plus centrales qui sous-tendent l'apprentissage, le langage, la résolution de problèmes et le raisonnement.

Les sciences cognitives forment une discipline qui associe principalement la psychologie, la linguistique, l'intelligence artificielle et les neurosciences. L'anthropologie, la sociologie et la psychologie sociale tendent à lui être intégrées, de même que la neuropsychologie, la psycholinguistique et la psychophysique. La perception, le langage, le raisonnement, l'action sont parmi ses objets d'étude, qui peuvent être abordés sous différents aspects (mathématique, psychologique, biologique). L'avancée des recherches en ce domaine passe à la fois par des travaux en neurobiologie, par des modélisations et des simulations sur ordinateur, mais aussi par des études sur le rôle de l'environnement social et culturel, sur les analogies entre le cerveau et l'ordinateur, entre l'être humain, l'animal et le robot, etc.
